Remembering Earthquake October 8, 2005

A Doctor came out of the operation theater and inspected an injured boy who just arrived in the hospital.

Who is accompanying this kid? asked the doctor.

An attendant replied: "No one is with him ! he is alone !"

Doctor asked in surprise, how come this little boy reached here alone on a chopper !

He got reply that probably everyone in the family died, he is the only survivor. And he is lucky to get an early turn on the helicopter.

Doctor got a bit confused, and inspected the wounds again !

Then in a polite voice, he asked the boy! Dear, as there is no one with you so I have to take permission from you ! Your legs got gangrene and we have no choice but to cut them from your body ! Please allow us to do so ?

.... and the boy unaware of the sensitivity of the question asked in reply,  "Would it hurt ? " The doctor replied, "No it won't".

That was the most shocking and unforgettable moment of my life !!! I was serving as a volunteer in the Operation Theater of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Islamabad.

Sometime earlier in my life, I once got some issues with my eyesight and I thought its getting weaker, and I clearly remember that I was in grief that I would not be able to see clearly without a pair of spectacles.I realized that my little loss made me sad, so what would be going through the heads of the people who lost their whole body parts that day ! A situation when people prayed for their death, as they had no one left among their family members, it was a time when the pain of surviving was much more than the pain of death.

The boy I talked earlier was going to lose his whole leg, and he has very less choices... infact one choice !
I didn't got a chance to attend him after his surgery, but that fear of losing a body part recalls me another story.

A young college boy arrived with leg wounds, this boy also got his leg crushed under the debris of his college classroom . While he was waiting for his turn to be operated, I decided to talk with him and gave him a little company. He hesitantly asked me, what would they do with my leg ? Would they fix it right ? Would I be able to walk and run again ? He was the captain of the college cricket team. And I, trying to prepare him for what is coming, replied; they would try to fix it, but most of the people who have gangrene are losing their whole body part. He got silent but was composed and seemed brave. I then changed the topic to divert his attention from his loss.

They spent about one hour with him in the Operation Theater, and when he came out he was sleeping. Soon after he came out of his anesthetic sleep, he tried to feel his leg with his hands. soon he realized that he has lost his legs he started screaming and I can never forget those dreadful screams of that boy. Those screams were very loud and were full of pain.

It is when I witnessed the pain of losing a body-part

-------------------------------

A women in her late twenties came out of the operation theater. Like thousands of them, she got her legs operated. Luckily she got only multiple fractures but not gangrene. While she woke up from anesthesia she start shouting, "Where is my baby? I want to see my baby!" The Nurse on duty got annoyed with her shouts and called her husband. The man came in with a few months old baby. And the mother asked the father that did he gave anything to the baby? He replied that the volunteers gave him some fortified baby milk, but the kid is not use to that artificial Milk, so the baby didn't took it. To my shock the mother started to breast feed her child ignoring her own condition that she just came out the the operation theater.

That was a touching moment when I experienced the extreme love of a mother for her child.

May Allah Protect us All !
